Why the big secret?

My sister and I were surging the net looking for sites that talk about alternative fuels. We saw the old standards such as Ethanol and hydrogen, and even a few on nuclear fuel cells to run you car. But one that I had never heard of was biomass gasification. This system has been around for one hundred years and takes everyday trash, even things like plastics, old wood, Styrofoam etc and converts it into an energy source that can run a building, a car, a home, etc. I’m not sure of the logistics because I am no expert, but I wonder why we don’t hear about this process more often.
